Whitetails Unlimited Inc. is seeking a new Communications Director / Magazine Editor to replace a retiring staffer. This position is a dynamic, multi-disciplinary role that includes coordination of, and production for, all communications functions for the organization, in addition to supervision of Communications Department staff and budget.
Major duties include editing and producing Whitetails Unlimited Magazine, an 85,000-circulation quarterly print magazine; production of the monthly WTU email newsletter; production of The Annual magazine; preparation and distribution of press releases; coordination of special PR projects; acting as contact for press inquiries and operating as WTU spokesperson as necessary; and to supervise, coordinate, develop content, and operate the WTU website and social media sites.
The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate degree in journalism, mass communications, or other related field, and broad experience in journalism/communications. Additionally, the candidate must have a strong proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe software (Photoshop, Bridge, InDesign, etc.). Related training and job experience will be considered in lieu of a degree. Coordinating with conventional printers (estimates, bids, production scheduling, knowledge of paper, processes, and terminology) as well as online publications (knowledge of software, terminology, and process) is important. Leadership, relationship building, and the ability work independently as well as part of a team is vital. Exposure to or participation in the shooting sports, hunting, the outdoors, and knowledge of the white-tailed deer is essential.
The ideal candidate will have very strong skills in writing, editing, photography, and conventional and digital graphic design. These skills need to be adaptable to produce appropriate style content for print, digital, press releases, radio, television, advertising, and material for other staff members. Must be able to work efficiently and clearly with freelance contributors, staff members, vendors, sponsors, and WTU volunteers, and to effectively plan and coordinate numerous future projects. There are always multiple projects ongoing simultaneously with deadlines that vary from suggestion to non-negotiable. Hard deadlines must always be met. The individual needs to be a self-starter with outstanding imagination, curiosity, and drive. This position requires consistent, outstanding results, most often with little direction or supervision.
This position is full-time at WTU national headquarters in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, with a projected start date in December 2022. Due to the constant interaction with other staff members remote working is not an option for this position. Some overnight travel is required. High moral standards, honesty, dependability, good character, and strong ethics are imperative.
